John Mayer reminds us all why it's fun to be John Mayer
John Mayer’s life does not suck. He’s pretty rich, he’s relatively popular, and from what I can tell, in good health. He’s currently rumored to be dating (nailing) Jennifer Aniston, and he gets special customer service from Apple (for products he probably didn’t have to buy). And I don’t think he’s even released a record recently. Because he doesn’t have to. Because he’s John Mayer.
Sure, he’s written some “away message ballads” like “Your Body is a Wonderland” and “Daughters,” but he’s also given the world John Mayer Has a TV Show and some Kaufman-inspired baseball play-by-play. His latest submission to the wide world of online video is an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at how he writes a song. You’ll have to watch the video to learn the full process, but I’ll tempt you with a brief excerpt of a conversation with he and his songwriting team:
Songwriter 1: “Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy is filled with regret.”
Mayer: “I don’t like this guy.”
Songwriter 2: “You like the girl, but you can’t get the girl.”
Mayer: “If I can’t get the girl, why don’t I just tell her I’m John Mayer? How about something everyone can relate to, like when you’re fuckin’ one supermodel and you make the other ones jealous?”
Oh fine, here’s the whole thing:
“If I wasn’t thought of as a young Bruce Springsteen, I sure am now.” Thanks, John. Can’t wait for the next album to drop in 2010.
